If your vehicle is unsuitable for public roads or is used almost exclusively off-road, you can apply to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for an exemption from paying road user charges (RUC).
Electric vehicles are also currently exempt from RUC. Light electric vehicles are exempt until 31 March 2024, and heavy electric vehicles until 31 December 2025.
