The Government will introduce legislation this year enabling time of use schemes to be developed to reduce travel times on busy roads and boost economi growth.
Cabinet has agreed to a legislative framework focused on seven key components that will enable local councils to propose time of use schemes on their networks.
Time of use charging is a way to improve traffic flow and shorten journey times by charging road users at different times or locations, depending on how busy the roads are. This means drivers will pay to travel at the busiest times of the day.
Any money collected must be invested back into transport infrastructure that benefits New Zealanders and businesses living and working in the region where the money was raised.
The Government expects to introduce a bill to Parliament before the end of the year. The Bill will then go to select committee where New Zealanders can make a submission on the legislation.
