The Government has introduced legislation that will enable roadside drug testing to improve road safety.
Approximately on in three road fatalities involves a drugged driver. In 2023 alone, alcohol and drugs contributed to 155 road fatalities.
Combined, alcohol and drugs are the leading contributor to fatal crashes in New Zealand, involved in 47 percent of road deaths between 2020 and 2023. Of these deaths, about 32 percent each year involved a driver who had consumed impairing drugs.
The Land Transport (Drug Driving) Amendment Bill will be sent to the Transport and Infrastructure Select Committee for consideration after its first reading this week.
