Legislation has been passed to move light electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) into the road user charges (RUC) system from April 1.

From 1 April, owners of PHEVS will be eligible for a reduced rate of $38 per 1000km, acknowledging that these vehicles use both petrol and electricity.

Owners of light EVs will pay the full road user charges rate of $76 per 1000km.

Owners of light EVs and PHEVs under 3.5 tonnes will need to buy a RUC licence and display it on their windscreen.

Road users help pay for New Zealand's land transport system through petrol excise duty (PED) or RUC. PED and RUC go towards the National Land Transport Fund which pays for maintaining and improving our land transport system.
