The Ministry of Transport has prepared a report that looks at causes and likely effects of New Zealand’s aging light vehicle fleet.
Vehicle age is a useful proxy for a number of important variables including vehicle safety and the level of harmful emissions. The report looks at the reasons that New Zealand’s light vehicle fleet is aging. It provides the results from a spreadsheet-based model that was used to look at scenarios on the likely age and size of our light vehicle fleet in 2020.
As well as concluding that the fleet is likely to continue to get older, this report also concludes that it is likely the light vehicle fleet will become smaller, especially per-capita by 2020.
This report draws extensively on data produced by the Ministry. This data is available as either a PDF report or as a downloadable excel sheet on our New Zealand Vehicle Fleet Statistics page.
