The Tauranga Eastern Link - a 23km four lane highway from Te Maunga to Paengaroa that bypasses Te Puke is one of the government's seven Roads of National Significance.
In July 2010, the government confirmed that the Tauranga Eastern Link road is to be tolled, allowing construction to begin on the road in early 2011. The $455 million road was completed on July 2015.

Tolls are $2 per trip for cars and motorcycles and $5 for heavy vehicles, which are collected by the New Zealand Transport Agency. It is estimated that all borrowing will be repaid within a toll operating period of 35 years, after which tolls will be removed.
