Roads of National Significance
Last updated on:
The seven Roads of National Significance projects address urgent priorities for the State highway system within, or close to, our five largest population centres. All support large traffic volumes, and all need work to reduce congestion, improve safety and support economic growth. The programme commenced in 2009.
The New Zealand Transport Agency is currently progressing to complete the RoNS projects as part of the National Land Transport Programme. Certain projects required further Ministry involvement, such as delivering the project through a PPP or tolling. These projects are explained further in the links below. Progress on the individual projects can be found on the NZTA website
The seven roads identified were:
- Puhoi to Wellsford – SH1
- Completion of the Auckland Western Ring Route – SH20/16/18
- Auckland Victoria Park bottleneck – SH1
- Waikato Expressway – SH1
- Tauranga Eastern Corridor – SH2
- Wellington Northern Corridor (Levin to Wellington) – SH1
- Christchurch motorway projects
