The Minister of Transport Simeon Brown signed the new Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 today.
Key changes in the new Rule include:
Requiring a cost benefit disclosure statement, meaning Road Controlling Authorities (RCAs) will need to describe travel time and safety impacts of proposed speed limit changes
Requiring variable speed limits outside school gates by 1 July 2026. RCAs will be able to set these times according to each school within reasonable constraints - that is, up to 45 minutes either side of the bell at the start and end of the school day
Enabling the possibility of 120km/h speed limits on expressways that are built and maintained to hold that limit
Requiring some speed limits reduced since 1 January 2020 to be reversed by 1 July 2025.
